I was lucky to come across a cheap e-bay listing for a couple of German pattern magazines from early 1950s and one of them had this beautiful dress pictured below in dark green. I knew I had a fabric stashed that was just right for it. It was a thicker cotton from IKEA that I bought a year ago and was saving for something special. Others might have pillowcases out of this navy blue fossil printed beauty, but I, my friends, made myself a dress.
This particular magazine came to me without the key and with just one pattern sheet --back then they came as separate booklets and I guess it was easy to misplace one. So if I wanted to sew this gorgeous thing, I had to trace all the lines on the sheet with my finger to find the right pattern pieces. Let me tell you that took long. But it was worth it. When I finally did find it, I decided to scan it and trace it, and I made it into a downloadable pattern. It's yours for the taking. Merry Christmas.
The sewing process was easy peasy, even with no instructions I just followed my gut feeling and it went smoothly. The pattern is very good and matches easily (one thing I found is that you might have to elongate the collar by an inch to make its ends meet right at the center of the neckline, so please take this into account if you want to sew a dress like this, because I did not correct it in my pattern!). It is also well measured which means that it is a bit too loose for me, as it is for bust measurement of 92 cm (and I'm more of a 88). I like the collar and the skirt which is nicely pleated at the center. I think I will make a sew-along soon because this is a really pretty dress and I'd like to have it in more fabrics. Would you like me to? Would you be willing to try your luck with this pattern, too?

DeleteI would love to use this but I am not sure about the best way to print this out? Is there any type of scale?
ReplyDeleteYou are right, I should've inserted a test square in there! Sorry about that, I've never made a pattern before so I forgot that is a good thing to do... Well, the way I printed it out was by using the "poster" setting in adobe acrobat while setting up print --it's in the table to the left of the miniature drawing. And that's it, I did nothing else. Then you just have to match the lines on the different sheets of print out by overlapping the paper by 0,5 cm I think (just so that the lines of the pattern meet, they don't need to overlap). It might be a little tricky, I know... probably would have been better if I had some help preparing this pattern but we gotta go with what we have for the time being! Hope this helps a bit! Let me know if you still have questions.
DeleteWow.. beautiful dress! Good job! I love your shoes too! :) :) Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Hope it works for you! If you ever decide to make it, please let me know!
DeleteWow... beautiful dress! Good job. I love your shoes too! :) :) Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Let me know if you ever try to sew it! I'd love to see your result.
DeleteThanks for the pattern it is gorgeous! Love the heavy material!
ReplyDeletewhat size do you print it at? we have A4 and A3 paper at work
I printed it out on A4 paper but I'm sure you can print it as A3 too. Just use the "poster" setting in adobe acrobat while setting up print --it's in the table to the left of the miniature drawing. Then you just have to match the lines on the different sheets of print out by overlapping the paper by 0,5 cm I think (just so that the lines of the pattern meet, they don't need to overlap). I hope this helps! Good luck with the pattern and let me know if you make it! :)
DeleteThis pretty dress looks so good on you! I have used Ikea cotton and Ikea bedsheets for sewing clothing too, it's very good quality :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for scanning this pattern, I really like the collar, it is adorable. I would probably make a top instead of a dress or modify the skirt as I'm too old for a gathered skirt :), but a sewalong sounds fun!
Happy holidays and have a great new year!
Oh, thank you for all the nice words!
DeleteYup, I considered making a top, too. The collar is just too good not to use in different projects. Also the kimono sleeves make this pattern super easy. Love it!
Gorgeous dress. And as always, lovely photos. Thank you for the digi download. That's very kind of you. Wishing you a very happy new year :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! An a lovely New Year to you, too, and happy sewing! Let me know if you ever make this dress, I'd love to see it!
DeleteThis dress is amazing and so the pictures, as usual!! You did a really good job!! :) Love the collar and the pattern of the fabric!
ReplyDeleteThank you dear! You're so lovely :).
DeleteThank you for sharing! You did a wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad so many people like it so much! The pattern is far from perfect but I hope it's usable --and I hope to improve it soon.
DeleteI found that project through Burdastyle and it's gorgeous! I'll stay tunned if you make the sewalong, I would really like to participate :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm so happy you like it! Hearing that others want to sew it makes me want to start the sew-along right away but I guess it'll have to wait a little yet :).
DeleteNo bo Cię nie mogę!! Piękności!!
ReplyDeleteJestem pewna, że możesz ;). A gdybyś chciała ją uszyć, byłabym zaszczycona!
DeleteWesołego i udanego!
Śliczna sukienka! Bardzo odważnie :) ostatnie zdjęcie piękne :)
ReplyDeletePozdrawiam :)
Dzięki, Julianka!
DeleteMasz absolutną rację, print to cudo!
Do ogarnięcia :).
Właśnie wypatrzyłam w tym coś w rodzaju plisy. Haha!
DeleteHappy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThat dress is fabulous and the fabric works fantastic with it. I like the collar, it looks very elegant and quite modern.
I don't know if you can read german, but if you face any problems with some terms, maybe I can help translating, just drop a word :-)
~ette
Happy New Year to you, too, Ette!
DeleteYou are such a dear! And I'll probably be coming to you for help with translating one small instruction for a coat that I want to try making because while I do get some German, and get even more with the help of the handy google translate, I sometimes have a hard time getting the meaning of a sentence, even when the words are clear ;).
Thanks!
zjawiskowa!
ReplyDeleteDziękuję, Olu! I też trochę ziółkowa ;).
DeleteYour dress is beautiful! A lovely intrepretation of the pattern.
ReplyDeleteI've downloaded the pattern because it's gorgeous. Especially that collar! If you do a sewalong I'd love to follow along. How much fabric does it take?
Wow, that would be so great if you followed! I'm very happy you like this dress so much :).
DeleteThe pattern calls for 4,5m x 0,90m (or, I guess, 1,50m x 2,50m) if you want to make it the way they intended, with the skirt hitting you mid-calf. Mine is shorter so it took a little less. But if you decide to go with this voluminous skirt, it truly is a fabric-eater.
That is a really gorgeus dress, I love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!
DeletePretty frock and it looks comfy. I would do a SAL. It appears a printable pattern is somewhere. I'll re-read the post to see.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Lyric
Researching how to make this pattern a reality for me. Looks as if the measurement converts to the bust being 36 inches and the waist being 28 inches. As a curvy gal it will be interesting drafting this pattern up 4 inches in the bust area and 11 inches in the waist area!!! Ay yi yi. I'm up for it for it is a way cute dress. Wonder if there are any other large gals interested in tackling this. When will you decide upon a sew-a-long (or not)? It would be fun.
ReplyDeleteAgain, thank you so much for sharing this with the world.
Cheers,
Lyric

Oh my, it would be exciting to watch someone with completely different shape wear this dress! I think it's very flattering for any figure thanks to the nice V-shaped neckline and the collar is just awesome. So that would be great if you did participate!
DeleteThat said, I frankly have no idea how to organize the sew-along so I'll just go with my gut feeling, like I usually do, and we'll see what comes of it :).
Anyway, please check back later in January for updates concerning the sew-along.
See you soon!
I came to this post via Pinterest. This is my first time at your blog, I'm looking forward to finding other gems here.
ReplyDeleteI, too am interested in doing a Sew-along, if you get that organized. Like Lyric, I my proportions are fuller and curvier, so it would be nice to work with others on alterations.
You did an amazing job on this dress! The stand-up collar makes it unique! And you are very modest - "Oh, just traced my finger over the pattern and then went with my gut to sew it with no instructions. No big deal." Yes, that is a big deal! Very impressive! Beautiful fabric, too.
DeleteI love the fabric you used for this dress it's amazing!
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for the pattern for the long sleeve light green dress in the image for ages but haven't had much luck. Was it in the bundle that you got? Would you publish it if you have it?
